Demography at ANU

Demography at ANU has a long and distinguished history starting with the appointment of WD Borrie to the Research School of Social Sciences in 1947. In recognition of this long history of achievements, we are pleased to announce the formation of an ‘ANU Demography’ group that will bring together the many scholars across ANU working on population-related issues. We are also pleased to announce the renaming of the ‘Australian Demographic and Social Research Institute’ to create a new ‘School of Demography.’

The Child Support Reform Study by Bruce Smyth and Bryan Rodgers has played a significant role in the Inquiry into and report on the Child Support Program.

Prestigious award to Peter McDonald

The Irene B Tauber Award, presented every two years by the Population Association of America, was awarded this year to Peter McDonald.

Grant success

Iwu Utomo, Peter McDonald and Ariane Utomo have been successful in gaining funding for two projects: 'The Greater Jakarta Transition to Adulthood Survey' and 'Meeting the needs of older persons in Kebumen, Gunung Kidul and Bukit Tinggi (rural Indonesia): Policy approaches'.

Graduation & PhD scholarship

Henri Sitorus and Michael De Looper graduated with a PhD in July along with graduate coursework students.

Kyosuke Tanaka has received a full scholarship for he PhD in Communication at Northwestern University in the US.

PhD Work in Progress Day

The annual PhD Work in Progress Day was held on 15 September. Students gained valuable presentation experience and received feedback on their research from academic staff.

Robert Ackland was farewelled on 14 August

Rob has taken a new joint appointment in the School of Sociology and the ANU Centre for Social Research and Methods. We will continue to collaborate with Rob on a variety of teaching and research activities and wish him well in his new position.
