James Raymer gives inaugural lecture

The measurement of migration and demographic change was the subject of James Raymer's, Research School of Social Sciences Inaugural Lecture held on Tuesday 28 May.

Asian demographic time bombs

Extremely positive feedback was received from participants of the forum on 'Population trends and the future of Asian societies', organised by the Crawford School of Public Policy. Panel members, Adrian Hayes, Peter McDonald, Zhongwei Zhao and Heather Booth, were all from ADSRI.

Employment at older ages

Peter McDonald gave a joint ADSRI/ARC Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research (CEPAR) seminar on 'Changes in employment at older ages in Australia: Trends and differentials' on 24 May.

MA Social Research (Advanced)

In May the first cohort of the Master of Social Research (Advanced) students gave their final seminar presentations. During the program, students develop and implement a self-directed research project.

Congratulations to Jiaying Zhao

Jiaying Zhao has recently submitted her PhD, received an award from the Chinese Government and taken up a Post-doctoral fellow position at the National Centre for Epidemiology & Population Health.

Suharti submits PhD

Congratulations to Suharti who submitted her PhD thesis, on 'Schooling and Destiny: Behind the inequality in education in Indonesia', at the end of May. She will return to the Directorate of Education in the National Development Planning Agency (BAPPENAS) in Jakarta, where she worked prior to beginning her PhD. She hopes that the knowledge and skills gained during her degree will be valuable in formulating education policies and programs in Indonesia.

 

Hasnani Rangkuti and Helen Moyle selected for overseas workshops

Hasnani Rangkuti, PhD Candidate, took part in the Brown International Advanced Research Institutes (BIARI) at Brown University in June. BIARI bring together young faculty and professionals from around the world to address pressing global issues through high-level intellectual collaborations across traditional academic boundaries.

Helen Moyle, also a PhD Candidate, will attend the Longitudinal Analysis of Historical Demographic Data workshop, which is part of the ICPSR Summer Program at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, from 22 July to 16 August.

 

Guangyu Zhang receives award

Guangyu Zhang, PhD graduate, has been awarded the Ken Foreman Award by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
