Graeme Hugo
1946-2015

Our esteemed friend and colleague, Graeme Hugo, died on 19 January 2015 following a short battle with lymphoma. In the survey of International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) members in 2009 by van Dalen and Henkens, he was voted by his peers as the 34th ranked demographer of all time for the quality of his work.

3-Minute Thesis Competition

Alice Falkiner won the 3 Minute Thesis Competition at the Australia Population Association Conference in December. Her presentation was on 'Dual carers in Australia: An examination of the experiences of Australians with dual caring responsibilities'.

New demographic methods textbook to be published this year

Gordon Carmichael's book, Fundamentals of Demographic Analysis: Concepts, Measures and Methods, will be published by Springer later this year. It is based on teaching material Gordon developed when teaching Principles of Population Analysis in what is now ADSRI during 1990-2001 and also used by Rebecca Kippen in teaching that course for several years thereafter.

 

Cook Islands policing survey

Chris McMurray has coordinated a survey of the Cook Island perceptions of policing.

Australian Population Association Conference

Edith Gray, Conference Convenor, with Ann Evans, Amina Keygan and others did a great job organising the APA Conference held in Hobart in December. ADSRI was very well represented at the conference.

Population Association of America Conference

ADSRI staff and students will be presenting papers at the PAA Conference in San Diego from 30 April to 2 May. A list of ANU participants and their papers can be found on the PAA website.
