Position vacant - Lecturer / Senior Lecturer

ADSRI is seeking a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in the field of Social Demography with research and teaching interests in Criminology. The successful candidate will have an outstanding record or demonstrated potential for excellence in research and publication in demography and will be expected to teach demography courses in the Master of Social Research and at least one course per year in the Criminology program.

Brian Houle - academic appointment

Dr Brian Houle has been appointed as a Lecturer and will commence on 1 July. He is currently Assistant Director of the Population Program at the Institute of Behavioral Science, University of Colorado - Boulder.


Population and climate

Adrian Hayes has co-edited a special issue of Population and Environment on 'Population and climate: Research innovations and bridges to policy'.

Award for book

Bruce Smyth was lead author on a chapter, ‘Fathers in Australia: A contemporary snapshot’, published in the book, Fathers in Cultural Context, which won the 2014 Global Psychology Book Award.

Gill Taylor - student administrator

We welcome Gill Taylor as our new student administrator. She brings a wealth of knowledge of student issues gained from working in the CASS student office and at the University of New South Wales.

Gill is the first point of contact for all current and potential Master and PhD students. She can help with any questions you have about courses, enrollments, etc. Gill works part-time and is in room 2004 in the Coombs Building. Her email address is

Three new PhD students have joined ADSRI recently - Jeofrey Abalos, from the Philippines, and Xiaoguang Jia and Fei Mao, from China.

The Greater Jakarta Transition to Adulthood Study led by Iwu Utomo and Peter McDonald has been chosen to be presented at the ANU-Indonesia Gifted Research Program in Indonesia.

In memory of Lado Ruzicka

The death of Lado Ruzicka, a distinguished demographer, closed the life story of a remarkable man who left a giant mark on the international demographic scene.

Habte Tesfaghiorghis passes away

Habte, after gaining his PhD at ANU, became a Research Fellow in Graduate Studies in Demography. Sadly, he passed away on 10 February.

The Australian Population Association 2014 Conference will be held in Hobart from 3-5 December. The APA is calling for abstracts by 31 July 2014 for presentations, posters, complete sessions and the PhD 3-minute challenge.

Lado Ruzicka Prize

Monica Howlett was awarded the 2013 Lado T Ruzicka Prize for the best overall result in the Master of Social Research.
