Jack Caldwell – Reflections on Ghana

Jack Caldwell with a crocodile in Ghana

We are grateful to Jack Caldwell and his son Colin Caldwell for another fascinating chapter in the life of Jack and Pat and their work in Ghana in the 1960s. As well as demographic research and family life in in Ghana this account has tales of spies, the Cold War, censored newspapers and performances by Pete Seeger and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Colin has noted that these are Jack’s words, but not as one steady line of articulation. Rather they have been constructed over time, adding where necessary additional contextual material and picking up from material Jack has published before. Jack and Colin have gone through every line several times and supplemented material with further thoughts and clarifications that Jack had along the way. With Jack’s chronic condition, it was the only way of getting a comprehensive and readable account.
